Book Tour

The Thirteenth Summer on Tour!

On December 11, 2010, we sent 50 copies of The Thirteenth Summer on tour around the country. We sent copies of the book to 50 teens in Atlanta, Athens, Boston, Chicago, San Diego, San Francisco, LA, New York, Miami, Pittsburgh, Columbia, and Raleigh-Durham, and the books traveled the nation, just like Rage and Crystal did on their memorable summer together.

The rules were simple: If you got a copy of one of the books on the tour, you could keep it for 7 days, read it (and fall in love with it, of course!), then you passed it on to a friend… and round and round it went. We tracked the books’ travels around the nation, and it was fun to see where they all ended up. One book traveled all the way to South America!

Lucky 14

My favorite part about the book tour was the way we kicked it off. I gave 14 of the 50 books to girls here in Athens, Georgia! It was supposed to be just 13 books (Get it? Lucky 13? The Thirteenth Summer? Anyway…), but so many girls wanted to participate that we ended up with the Lucky 14!

We converged on Dog Ear Books, a new, funky bookstore in downtown Athens, and kicked off the book tour there. If you’ve read my facebook page, you know the hilarious story about the girls who sang to me at my first book-signing this summer, right in the middle of Barnes & Noble… in their bunny slippers. Well I flew one of them in to sing again! Micah Walker, sixteen-year-old singer-songwriter extraordinaire, was on hand to perform… ’cause any Thirteenth Summer event has to have music, right? Rage wouldn’t have it any other way! I had such a blast meeting the girls, and several of them called me later to say The Thirteenth Summer is their new favorite book!

Me and Mr. Tall, Dark & Handsome at the Book Tour Kickoff! Yep, those are red cowboy boots... a tribute to Rage Waters and a Thirteenth Summer event tradition!

Karla and Delia! These girls are so spunky... Crystal Waters would be best friends with them!

Sarah and Liz, who are two of the book's biggest fans!

This is Essence, whose book got destroyed in a freak septic tank accident (ewww!), but never fear, we got her a replacement...

Micah Walker, rock star/humanitarian crusader in the making! One of the coolest girls I know.
